Martin Puryear Website

Martin Puryear was an artist that relied on his ability to make art by hand. He liked combining different cultures and knowing about their histories when it came to his art. His art appears very abstract yet simple. The materials of his varied from wood to tar and wire; and things he could shape on his own. And interesting piece is a long misshapen latter that extends from the top of his exhibit to the just above the floor. The size of his pieces appeared very large.
I appreciate his consistency and meaning in his art. It differs very much from what I would make or think of as art and the randomness intrigues me. The meaning of his art is obviously not known at first glance; hence knowing cultural backgrounds would help the understanding. I think things on different scales, especially when put together in an art exhibit, create a whole new dimension with the pieces. The sizes compete, and the materials compete, possibility like a cultural discussion. Martine was a very impressive artist.

Kendall Buster and Methods and Materials Website

Methods and Materials is an establishment that assembles and constructs art pieces. They range from sculptures, to carvings, to large-scale art pieces. Kendall Buster is an artist that got a BFA from Corcoran College of Art and Design ands a MFA from Yale University that is involved with this.  She has art all around the United States. She not only commissions sculptures, but is a professor in the Department of Sculpture and extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Kendall has a distinct style in her sculptures. They appear to be limited to a specific color palate and symmetrical in certain aspects. Some of her modules are made with wire frames and delicate netting; this gives it a neutral color. The color does not distract from the architectural type of art created. The lighting is what seems to have a different effect. In order to understand her art better I would personally want to see them in the environment in which it was created for. I think the environment in this case says more about the piece than the piece itself. I like art that provokes thought, and her sculptures have this effect on me

Final Chair Project

The main support.

The back connects the seats. You must support the person sitting behind you if you wish to lean back. (Ties in the relationship aspect that way).

Fun little detail. But it also holds the seat to the arm rest- win win.

Despite the struggles of this project, I have come up with a two person chair! I may add a bit more detail to the chair itself, and I will get a picture that PROVES it holds two people. It feels good to know it works!

Chair Progress

A cardboard bomb went off in my room.

This is where the person will sit. A a small piece of cardboard will go across the seat area showing off the pattern, yet being more comfortable to sit on.

This is a side view of the prototype I'm planning on pursuing.
A few ripped pieces of cardboard, utter frustration, and one desperate email to Margie later I've started to get the hang of structure as it pertains to cardboard chairs. Please do not be alarmed by the unfinished look to my prototypes. Here is a picture of my progress so far.

Will you be my Valentine?

We took a break from cardboard chairs to learn about color theory. We worked with pairing, interlacing, and distinguishing colors and their groupings by applying them to valentine cards. It was a fun project!

Paige made ma a Valentine!

More chair process pictures to come!

And So It Begins

We are now making chairs out of cardboard. That doesn't sound so difficult does it? Think again. Without any adhesives we must be able to sit on our chair 6 inches off the ground. Let the prototyping begin!
Triangles seem pretty sturdy.

I'm attempting a two person chair.

Cardboard...in every form... has decided to be difficult. Maybe the leaky cup is a sign..

Final Project

This project was very interesting in terms of putting together the photos and mapping time and space. I ended up using tape to keep it together. I like the fact that it pops from the mat and gives it more depth.
